More on the films:
It Never Was You (2003), 6 min
I chose the music video for It Never Was You/Tina directed by Sandeep Mehta to pair with Yōsuke’s pick, Rave Macbeth, because it’s a personal favorite and Thomas Brinkmann’s compositions and samples reference a wide range of 20th-century art. His label, Max Ernst, and his sampling style recalls Ernst’s frottage technique, in which paper is rubbed over textured surfaces to produce spontaneous, dreamlike images out of chance patterns. The song was originally written in 1938 by German composer Kurt Weill in collaboration with Maxwell Anderson for Knickerbocker Holiday, a musical satire of American democracy. I find the music video painterly and dreamlike, reminiscent of the vibrant color palette of German Expressionism and 20th century American portraiture.

Rave Macbeth (2001), 81 min
As many of you may know already, raving is a big part of my life. But there is a lot to this culture that has to be hidden from the casual attendees. What goes on behind the scenes - the power dynamics, the lust, the violence - has to be hidden from you in order to keep the gears turning and the spirit of PLUR alive. With this screening I intend to unveil the blueprint to those who have that fire burning deep inside them to become King of the rave. Bisexual dutch angles. Rave polycules. Homoerotic M**der. If you’re ready to peak into the true world of raving and the people - like me - who put them on, then look no further than Rave Macbeth.
