Directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans and written by (and starring) Marlon and Shawn Wayans, Scary Movie follows a group of teenagers who run someone over with a car, dump his body in a lake, and swear themselves to secrecy. A year later, they are pursued by a menacing killer who is dressed as Ghostface from the Scream movies. Literally. In one scene they filmed with an actual costume used in the making of Scream. The lore implications here are dizzying.
25th anniversary! Feel old yet? Scary Movie is a Naked-Gun-style bang-bang parody of the big horror flicks and teen slashers of the time, like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, but with other references layered over it like The Matrix, The Usual Suspects, The Blair Witch Project, The Sixth Sense and the Budweiser commercial campaign where people yelled “whassup” at each other. As a film comedy taken on its own merits, has it held up? Who can say. Funny is in the eye of the beholder. As a Rosetta Stone for pre-9/11 American pop culture, though, it’s impeccable. This is as close as we get to a time machine. Gaze upon our MTV Movie Awards and despair.
