Clinical approach to spinal cord disease in small animals, focusing on lesion localization, differentials, and early care.
About this Event

Spinal cord disease is a common cause of paresis and paralysis in dogs and cats and often requires rapid, structured clinical decision-making. This session provides a practical, systematic approach to evaluating small animal patients with suspected myelopathy.

Participants will learn how to localize spinal cord lesions using key neurologic examination findings and develop prioritized differential diagnoses based on signalment, onset, and progression of clinical signs. The program will also review evidence-based initial management strategies, including patient stabilization, medical therapy, activity restriction, and criteria for advanced diagnostics or referral.

Through practical clinical reasoning and real-world examples, attendees will gain tools to improve diagnostic confidence, guide treatment decisions, and communicate effectively with clients when managing spinal cord disease in small animal practice.

This free continuing education event is hosted by SAVES and offers 1 hour of RACE-approved continuing education credit.
