About this Event
The Salangai Pooja (prayer for the bells) is conducted after a dancer achieves a base level of competency. The teacher ties the salangai (bells) on the ankles of the student for the first time with a blessing. Traditionally, it is the first occasion a dancer wears their bells in public performance.
The Salangai Pooja is intended to motivate dance students to intensify their commitment to the art form of Bharatanatyam. This performance is an intimate gathering where dance students perform in front of their guru/teacher, family, and friends. It tests the initial ability of a dance student to face an audience as they start on their journey of presenting a larger public debut performance (arangetram).
Dancers who perform the Salangai Pooja are those who have learned almost all of the marga (Bhatanatyam items) who are yet to make their debut performances. Aalokam's dance students who will be performing are Anushka, Keerthana, Malavika, Priya, Sahaana, Uma, and Vani.
The dancers will be accompanied by live musicians:
Vignesh Ravichandran: vocals
Bala Skandan: mirdangam
Swetha Lakshmi Narasimhan: violin
Light refreshments will be served after the performance
