Sacred Presence: Afro-Caribbean Spirituality and the ImageJuneteenth Conversation & Panel Discussion
Presented in observance of Juneteenth, this conversation explores the relationship between Afro-Caribbean spirituality, ritual aesthetics, photography, memory, and Black diasporic identity. Inspired by Lisa DuBois’s photographic work documenting Black women dressed in white within sacred ceremonial contexts, the program examines how photography becomes a space for ancestral remembrance, healing, cultural preservation, and spiritual witness.
Moderated by Lucumi priestess and professor of critical ethnic studies and modern languages, Dr. Jacqueline Lazú of DePaul University, the panel features lens-based artist Lisa DuBois, Lucumi priestesses Iya Eugenia Tiombe Meteye and Iya Gwen Luster in a dialogue addressing Yoruba/Lucumí traditions, sacred dress, embodiment, visual culture, and the role of image-making in documenting communities whose spiritual histories have often been marginalized or erased.
Guests are encouraged to wear white in honor of Juneteenth ancestors and the sacred traditions reflected throughout the exhibition. Music and refreshments will be included.
