Workshop with Austrian (documentary) film maker, Benedikt Werth. In his workshop “Filling Spaces,” Benedikt Werth explores the question of how cinematic spaces are created—and how they move between documentation, fiction, and memory. The idea is that documentary filmmaking always begins with collecting: images, sounds, words, fragments. Only in the editing process - through reordering, discarding, and adding - does a narrative space begin to unfold.
The workshop is aimed at (documentary) filmmakers and invites participants to bring their own film material in order to work together on essayistic forms of narration. The focus is less on the classical montage of a film than on discovering new relationships between material, space, and perception. Participants will explore how documentaries and working with memory can create real-life encounters. The focus will be on urban spaces in Kairo and beyond, and how filmmaking is always a form of collecting information in order to tell stories.

About the Artist:
Benedikt Werth is an Austrian documentary filmmaker and artist who was already active in Cairo in 2025 as part of a research project. In 2026 he is developing the project “Filling Spaces” in collaboration with the Austrian Cultural Forum Cairo.

ورشة عمل مع مخرج الأفلام الوثائقية بنيدكت فيرت
من خلال ورشة العمل بعنوان "ملىء الفراغات" سوف يستكشف بينيدكت فيرت كيفية تكوين الفضاءات السينمائية و كيف تتنقل بين التوثيق و الخيال و الذاكرة. تنطلق الفكرة من ان السينما الوثائقية تبدأ في جوهرها بعملية الجمع و التجميع: صور و أصوات و كلمات. فقط في مرحلة المونتاج – من خلال إعادة الترتيب و الحذف و الإضافة – يبدأ الفضاء السردي في الظهور و التكشف.
تستهدف ورشة العمل مخرجي السينما ( في المجال الوثائقي) و تدعو المشاركين الى احضار مواد أفلامهم الخاصة للعمل معا على الأشكال المقالية للسرد. لا يتمحور التركيز هنا حول المونتاج الكلاسيكي للفيلم بقدر ما يتجه نحو استكشاف علاقات جديدة بين المادة و الفضاء و الادراك. سوف يستكشف المشاركون كيف يمكن للسينما الوثائقية و الاشتغال على الذاكرة أن يفضيا الى لقاءات حية مع الواقع المعاش. سيتمحور التركيز حول الفضاءات الحضرية في القاهرة و خارجها و حول فكرة ان صناعة الأفلام هي في جوهرها عملية جمع متواصلة للمعلومات بهدف رواية القصص.
