A European princess, aggravated by the overwhelming pressure of her public life and regimented schedule, slips her handlers and takes a sedative that causes her to wander alone in an intoxicated fog through the dark streets of Rome. Luckily, she is helped by a down-on-his-luck newspaper reporter and good (barely) Samaritan, who realizes an exclusive interview might be just the ticket to get back on his editor’s good side. Naturally they fall in love and, with photos of them both about to be published, they must decide whether to return to their lives or sacrifice everything they know to be together.
It’s impossible to tell without more information whether that’s the synopsis of a Hallmark original movie (no offense meant to the Royal Christmas stans out there) or one of the most perfect film romances ever developed from a negative. Which should just go to show you: plot ain’t everything. Gregory Peck and rookie Audrey Hepburn being smooth and natural and astonishingly beautiful at each other will take you a long way; flawless direction from William Wyler (three-time Oscar winner for Best Director), a Dalton Trumbo script and shooting on location in Rome less than five years after the end of the war can take you over the finish line.
FILM TALK: Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk and audience Q&A with Jana Henson, screenwriter and American Stage Communications Coordinator. Film Talks are included with movie admission.
