In The Retold Tales Book Club, we will explore a range of retellings, from classic novels and timeless fairy tales to myths, legends, and folklore from around the world. Whether it's a modern take on a Shakespearean play, a contemporary twist on a Greek myth, or a reimagining of a beloved fairy tale, we're here to explore the creativity and imagination of authors who breathe new life into old stories.
Join us as we discuss the unique perspectives, themes, and characterizations found in retellings. From analyzing how these stories reinvent the familiar to exploring the ways in which they reflect and comment on our own world, this book club will try to offer a fresh and engaging look at the power of storytelling across cultures and generations.
You can read the just the retelling, or the retelling and the original. It's up to you as your time allows.
July's title:
Lilith - Nikki Marmery
In the Garden of Eden, Lilith and Adam are equal until Adam demands her submission. She refuses and is banished. Watching in fury as God creates the submissive Eve, Lilith, who has tasted the Tree of Knowledge, knows why Asherah, God's wife, is missing.
Lilith plans to rescue Eve and find Asherah, restoring balance and reclaiming her place in Paradise. Her quest spans history, encountering figures like Norea, Jezebel, and Mary Magdalene. In the modern age, witnessing the impact of inequality, Lilith realizes how to right the wrongs done to women and humankind.
Inspired by ancient myths and suppressed scriptures, "Lilith" is a thought-provoking novel with an evocative literary voice and a compelling heroine.
