About this Event

Last year, hundreds of you turned out for the first Republic Day in Trafalgar Square. In 2025, we'll be returning with an even bigger and better celebration of democracy.

In 2025, we're returning to Trafalgar Square on May 10th, where live music and entertainment meet rousing speeches to fire up the imagination, to bring to life a vision of a better, fairer, more democratic Britain.

Republic Day is a reminder of what’s possible, of the brilliance, ambition and creativity of ordinary people who strive to do an extraordinary thing.

Republic Day will feature a rally on Trafalgar Square, with music, entertainment and speeches from campaigners, activists, writers and politicians. You’ll meet Chuck the Rex, a fifteen-foot dinosaur that represents the monarchy, a tamed fossil that belongs in a museum.

Speakers

We have a great line up of speakers, including (from left to right):

Kelechi Okafor is a storyteller. Whether it’s through her podcasts or books or informative video essays, Kelechi explores and challenges what it means to navigate modern society based on what we remember from our histories.

Natalie Bennett is a politician and journalist who served as Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales from 2012 to 2016. She is also a current member of the House of Lords.

Yasmin Poole is a public speaker, board director and youth advocate from Australia. She is a Rhodes Scholar and has received The Martin Luther King Jr Center's Youth Influencer of the Year award.

Norman Baker is the author of And What Do You Do? What the royal family don't want you to know. He is presently writing a follow-up book on the royals for publication in the autumn of 2025. He was the Lib Dem MP for Lewes between 1997 and 2015, during which time he was the only MP to initiate a debate on royal finances. Between 2010 and 2014, he was a minister at the Department for Transport, and then Minister of State at the Home Office.

Grace Blakeley is a staff writer for Tribune Magazine and author of Vulture Capitalism: Corporate Crimes, Backdoor Bailouts, and the Death of Freedom.

Jassa Ahluwalia is a British actor, author and trade unionist. He came to prominence as Rocky in the hit BBC Three series Some Girls, followed by starring roles in Unforgotten, Ripper Street, and Peaky Blinders. Jassa created the hashtag #BothNotHalf to explore mixed identity in light of his own British-Indian heritage. His TEDx talk on 'How Language Shapes Identity' has clocked up over 200k views and his BBC One documentary 'Am I English?' won an Asian Media Award in 2022.

And of course Graham Smith, Republic's CEO and more to be announced!

With Music From...
Teshay Makeda

Teshay Makeda, an award-winning South London Native, fuses Reggae, Soul & Rnb creating her own dynamic genre dubbed ’Roots Soul'. Teshay is an international artist who'll be joining us on the main stage at Republic Day!

Nasty Fishmonger

Fist-raising hardcore folk from Bristol. Nasty Fishmonger plays activist anthems with camaraderie and charm that is hard to resist.

Strawberry Thieves Choir

Strawberry Thieves Choir sings to support political change. They'll be singing to support the abolition of the monarchy on Republic Day!

Change the Country for Good

Come and join Chuck the Rex, Republic's 15 foot dinosaur - as he takes on the royals on Trafalgar Square for Republic Day!

With support for the monarchy falling and the republican movement growing, we know the monarchy is in trouble. And the possibility of change is within our grasp. It’ll be hard work, but the rewards will be huge.

The monarchy is a major obstacle to a fairer, greener and more democratic Britain. A republic gives us the tools to face the nation’s biggest challenges, to create a better democracy that delivers for all.
