Repairing with gold: Kintsugi workshop with maki-e artist Hakose Junichi

Repair a cherished broken object from your home using kintsugi-inspired techniques in a hands-on workshop led by Hakose Junichi, master urushi lacquer and maki-e artist from Wajima.
Roughly translating as ‘joining with gold’, kintsugi is a centuries-old Japanese method of repairing ceramics, developed by maki-e artisans, using urushi lacquer dusted with powdered gold. Rather than hiding cracks and breaks, the technique highlights them, telling an object’s story.
In this introductory workshop, Hakose guides participants through an adapted approach to kintsugi, using synthetic gold and silver powder, epoxy glue and beginner-friendly methods that make it possible to complete a finished repair within the session. Participants receive expert advice on preparing, repairing and decorating their pieces, and can take their completed item home at the end of the workshop.
Participants are asked to bring one cracked or chipped ceramic or glass object, no larger than the size of two open hands, along with a box or protective container to transport their finished piece home. All other materials are provided.
The workshop is expected to last around 1 hour 30–40 minutes, although the duration may vary slightly depending on the piece brought by each participant.
These workshops form part of a wider programme exploring the resilience of Wajima lacquerware, including a ground-floor display and a craft demonstration on 3 March.
The event series is presented as part of the Spotlight on Local Japan Programme, organized in collaboration with JNTO, which accepts applications from potential collaborators based in Japan to co-create cultural events presenting Japan’s regional diversity at Japan House London.
Tickets for the event are non-refundable. Please read our Terms and Conditions for Event Tickets before purchasing your ticket.
