About the piece:
In her 2012 article “Bad Feminist,” published by VQR, Roxane Gay suggests that many of the tensions and negative connotations that accompany the term feminism can be attributed to a damaging, socially-constructed concept deemed essential feminism. Gay, an American essayist and commentator, describes essential feminism as “the notion that there are right and wrong ways to be a feminist,” leaving those who do not live up to societal expectations feeling unfit or inadequate to identify themselves as such.

About the author
Roxane Gay is a contemporary, prolific American author, professor, and social commentator whose work extensively explores the intersections of feminism, race, and body image through the lens of personal experience. A Haitian-American writer born in Omaha, she rose to international prominence with her 2014 New York Times best-selling essay collection Bad Feminist and has since authored critically acclaimed works, including the novel An Untamed State and the vulnerable memoir Hunger. Beyond her literary output, Gay holds the Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair at Rutgers University, has broken barriers as a lead writer for Marvel’s World of Wakanda, and continues to influence public discourse as a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times and founder of the Roxane Gay Books imprint.
