Raise the Bar presents a another racous, dynamic and thought-provoking evening of live poetry at Bristol Beacon, headlined by UK poet and performance legend Salena Godden. With features from incredible UK based poets Nikita Gill and Cecilia Knapp.
This edition of Raise the Bar is part of Lyra - Bristol Poetry Festival 2024, taking place from April 12th - 21st.

Salena Godden FRSL is an award-winning novelist, poet and broadcaster of Jamaican and Irish mixed heritage. Her debut novel Mrs Death Misses Death won the Indie Book Awards for Fiction and the People’s Book Prize, and was shortlisted for the British Book Awards and the Gordon Burn Prize. Her work has been widely published, anthologised and broadcast on BBC radio, TV and film. Most recently Rough Trade Books published a hardback edition of Pessimism is for Lightweights - the title poem is on permanent display at The Peoples History Museum in Manchester. Salena Godden is one of Britain’s foremost poets whose electrifying live performances have earned her a devoted following. Her literary childhood memoir Springfield Road - A Poets Childhood Revisited and a new full poetry collection With Love, Grief and Fury will be published with Canongate on 2nd May 2024. An eagerly anticipated second novel set in the Mrs Death Misses Death universe is due for publication with Canongate in 2025. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, a Patron of Hastings Book Festival and an Honorary Fellow of West Dean, Sussex.
? NIKITA GILL ?
Nikita Gill is an Irish-Indian poet who has the attention of 700,000 Instagram followers worldwide for her work. Her work offers a shift of perspective which centres women in both Greek and Hindu myth as well as folklore. She has given a TEDx Talk, spoken at every major literary festival in the UK and been shortlisted for the Goodreads Choice Award in poetry three times, the Childrens Poetry Award two times and longlisted for the Jhalak Prize. Gill has written seven poetry collections and two verse novels. Her book of fables for children Animal Tales from India and her newest verse novel for Doctor Who were both out in October 2023.
?CECILIA KNAPP?
Cecilia Knapp is a poet and novelist and the Young People’s Laureate for London 2020/2021. She was shortlisted for the 2022 Forward prize for best single poem. She is the winner of the 2021 Ruth Rendell award and has been shortlisted for both the Rebecca Swift Women’s prize and the Outspoken poetry prize. Her debut poetry collection Peach Pig was published by Corsair in 2022 and was the Observer’s poetry book of the month for October. Her poems have appeared in The Financial Times, Granta, The White Review, Wasafiri, Popshot, Ambit, Magma and bath magg and anthologised. She curated the anthology Everything is Going to be alright: Poems for When you Really Need Them, published by Trapeze in 2021. Her debut novel Little Boxes is published by The Borough Press (Harper Collins.) Purchase here. In 2023, Little Boxes was longlisted for The Authors Club Best First Novel Award.

Doors open at 7:00pm, and the bar will be open with a selection of drinks (alcoholic + non-alcoholic).
The show begins at 7:30pm, so please arrive and be seated promptly. The event includes a 15 minute interval. We aim to finish at 9:30pm.
