On 16 June 2026 the Race for Peace is organising and supporting a number of events around the world to promote peace in our world, our communities and our homes. The date marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Soweto Uprising when the schoolchildren of Soweto stood against the Apartheid regime; hundreds of young people lost their lives when the security forces opened fire on their peaceful protest.
Race for Peace is an idea that was initiated 30 years ago by Tim Cantle-Jones of Newcastle upon Tyne, who has spent the past three decades linking the North East of England and South Africa, through sport and culture.
In Newcastle upon Tyne it’s a Peace Walk that will take place between 6pm and 8pm on the evening of 16 June.
Participants will gather at Newcastle Civic Centre and walk the short distance to Exhibition Park.
The Walk will be led by young people waving flags of the world and dressed in different national costumes. After arrival, there will be a further procession around the park. At the Peace Walk start there will be a stall with “Ubuntu”/Walk T-shirts for sale, introduction and welcome, safety and African drummers’ performance; also a stall in the park, where there will music and dance performances from around the world.
