Qualitative Interviewing in Music Research: An RMA Study Day

Date: Thu Jun 27 2024

Time: 10:30 AM - 17:50PM

Location: Royal College of Music

This event will bring together doctoral students from a range of disciplines within music research (e.g. music psychology, ethnomusicology, performance) to share ideas about methods and challenges in qualitative interviewing, and to learn from each other. Qualitative interviewing offers an opportunity to shine a spotlight on participants’ experiences and perspectives on a given topic. It plays an important role in knowledge generation, allowing researchers to question the underlying assumptions of existing theories and engage in the development of new theories.

In addition to presentations from doctoral students and early career researchers on their own experiences in qualitative interviewing, we will have two keynote presentations from Dr Katherine Williams, Research Fellow in Popular Music Songwriting (University of Huddersfield) and Dr Carsten Wernicke (University of Koblenz/Leuphana University).

Presentations will last for 20 minutes. This study day will be supportive in nature, and will be followed by 15 minutes of discussion rather than the traditional Q & A that you may experience at an academic conference.

This will be a hybrid event; There will be limited places for in-person attendees. When reserving your ticket, please specify whether you would like to attend in-person or online. In-person places will be designated on a first come, first served basis (please only register for an in-person ticket if you plan on attending for the full day). In the event that we reach capacity for in-person attendees, a waiting list will be utilised. If you are no longer able to attend in-person, I would be grateful if you could return your ticket via Eventbrite so that someone else can take the place. There will be an unlimited amount of online tickets.

More details will be shared with in-person/online attendees closer to the event.
