About this Event
Join us as we step out of the cold New England weather and into the beginnings of spring with Smith Botanical Garden's Spring Bulb Show. We will meet for lunch and conversation at Smith's Campus Center Cafe at 100 elm St, Northampton MA 01063 at 11:30am. Then a quick walk through campus to the bulb show where we will break off into smaller groups and take in the sights and aromas of the blossoms. Feel free to bring a camera to take pictures of the flowers, remember to dress in layers to be comfortable in outdoor and indoor temps, and your wallet to pay for lunch.
SPRING BULB SHOW: The Botanic Garden’s Spring Bulb Show is a Smith College tradition that began in the early 1900s. Ordinarily blooming at different times during the spring, over 8,000 bulbs are coaxed into flowering simultaneously, providing an explosion of color against the backdrop of the departing winter. An impressive display of crocuses, hyacinths, narcissi, irises, lilies, tulips and non-hardy South African bulbs offer an early glimpse of spring. Smith Art students have also installed artwork throughout the bulb show, and there is a special Native American Exhibit:
ART AT THE BULB SHOW: Koanbanchinemma (do you see the light (in me)) features six Nipmuc artists, cultural and land stewards. At its core, this exhibition calls for a heightened awareness of the ways in which Indigenous knowledge systems can awaken our senses, our understanding, and our collective responsibility to care for the natural world.
PARKING is limited to street parking in Northampton which is either metered or on residential streets. Residential parking will require parking further away and walking to the campus.
