Healing the Wounds of Trauma and Dissociation with Creative Expression

About Jamie and her workhop......

Although various diagnostic presentations can result from unhealed trauma, in the simplest and most human sense, trauma is an unhealed wound. The impact of those wounds, which can include dissociative responses both helpful and unhelpful can be profound and not easily addressed through words alone. In this experiential workshop, Dr. Jamie Marich—an expressive arts therapist, a performing expressive artist, and EMDR therapist and trainer—will present on the fundamentals of trauma and dissociation through this person-centered, expressive arts lens. Marich draws on her experience as a humanitarian aid worker in post-war Bosnia-Hercegovina teaching English and music through the expressive arts through her experiences as a teacher in the EMDR community known for breaking down stigma around dissociation to offer this interactive talk and discussion about healing the wounds that keep us and our clients stuck. In the experiential components of the workshop members of the audience will be guided to consider how creativity and expression may be the missing components that too often get overlooked in trauma care.
Objectives

1. To define and discuss trauma and dissociation through the person-centered, humanitarian lens as an unhealed wound

2. To describe the various ways that creativity and expression, specifically expressive arts therapy, can assist trauma survivors in working with the aspects of their healing that cannot easily be accessed with words alone

3. To apply at least two expressive strategies with people that participants serve, regardless of their past experience with creativity or expression in the healing of trauma
