Covering the social/institutional structures driving division and the practical tools needed to implement workplace policies
About this Event

In this half-day training session, attendees will learn the social and institutional structures driving division and hate and the practical tools needed to implement workplace inclusion practices that authentically improve the lived experiences of diverse communities. This skill-building workshop will enable cross-sector professionals to connect internal inclusion efforts with external impact strategies, improve employee policies and procedures and develop workplace culture practices for enabling cohesion and psychological safety.
As part of a Pride Month special, guidance will draw from practices developed by queer liberation movements, offering true stories from LGBTQ+ History and Pride celebrations to bridge theory and practice. By the end of the session, attendees will learn:

  • How systems of inequality are organised, managed, justified and experienced
  • The cognitive processes of ignorance and hate and what to do to intervene
  • The cultural barriers to fairness and freedom and how to transform them
  • The role of their organisation in a wider social system of power
  • The lessons LGBTQ+ rights organising can teach us for achieving fairness and freedom

In partnership with Elevate, and kindly hosted by Bruntwood SciTech, this session is delivered by Coliberate founder, Dr. Christopher Owen. Drawing off his PhD research in intersectional systemic oppression and over a decade of experience working with LGBTQ+ communities, Dr. Owen has presented to thousands internationally and has worked with a wide variety of sectors and clients, from small community groups like Pride in the Moorlands to large corporations like Starbucks.
