About this Event
'CRUK Career Development Fellowship - Exploiting Post-Surgical BBB Permeability in Brain Cancer'
Speaker: Dr Tom Kisby (Research Fellow, Division of Neuroscience, The University of Manchester)
Keynote Lecture title: 'CRUK Career Development Fellowship Award'
Date: Wednesday 11 June
Time: 15:15–16:15
Location: OCRB Lecture Theatre
About the event
Join us for a keynote lecture by Dr Tom Kisby, recipient of the CRUK Career Development Fellowship Award, who will present his current research programme in brain tumour therapeutics. His work focuses on understanding the biology of postoperative blood–brain barrier permeability and leveraging this window to develop targeted nanotherapies for aggressive brain tumours.
The session will also briefly outline the CRUK Career Development Fellowship Award and how it supports researchers in establishing independence, building collaborations, and developing ambitious cancer research programmes. There will be time for questions covering both the research and broader aspects of fellowship development, including the application process and preparing a competitive proposal.
What you’ll learn
· Insight into an emerging research area at the interface of neuro-oncology and nanomedicine
· A real-world example of a successful fellowship research vision
· How fellowship funding can support the transition to research independence
· Practical insights into the application process, collaboration building, and career development opportunities.
Who should attend
This event is open to researchers, clinicians, and PhD students, as well as anyone with an interest in neuro-oncology, translational cancer research, nanomedicine, and innovative approaches to treating aggressive brain tumours.
About the speaker
Dr Tom Kisby is a Research Fellow in the Division of Neuroscience at The University of Manchester. He completed his PhD in Regenerative Medicine before undertaking postdoctoral research in cancer nanotechnology within the Nanomedicine Lab.
He later moved into an independent junior Principal Investigator role within the Centre for Nanotechnology in Medicine, where his research focused on developing drug delivery technologies for aggressive brain tumours, with a particular emphasis on advanced preclinical models. He was recently awarded a CRUK Career Development Fellowship to support the development of non-invasive strategies to prevent the rapid early recurrence of glioblastoma. Working in close collaboration with colleagues across the MCRC, the GJBRC, The Christie, and Salford Royal, his research aims to deliver clinically translatable solutions to a longstanding unmet need in this devastating disease.
