ABOUT THE FILM
Joan Huang idolizes the popular girls and dreams of being prom queen, but fears the only way to win is to look like all the past queens whose portraits line her high school halls. Enter Ethnos: a shady cosmetic surgery clinic that makes people of color appear white. Joan undergoes the procedure and wakes up a beautiful blonde destined for the crown, but at what cost? Blending sharp satire, sci-fi, and body horror, starring Shirley Chen (Dìdi), McKenna Grace (Regretting You), and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever) proves that identity is never only skin-deep.
Last year, AZN AMERICANA had the privilege of watching SLANTED at SXSW, where it won the Narrative Feature Grand Jury Prize — we knew then that this was a film that would mark a moment in time, reflecting the real experiences of many Asian women & femmes who grew up in Western and/or predominantly white communities through a genre-bending story.
POST FILM DISCUSSION + Q&A
Following the screening, we'll host an intimate conversation featuring SLANTED costume designer, Michelle J. Li, Vogue’s research manager and senior digital line editor covering culture, Lisa Wong Macabasco; moderated by Gabrielle (Gabby) Nguyen, AZN AMERICANA CEO/Co-Founder and Impact Producer, about the film, the strides that Asian femme storytellers are making, and how films like SLANTED are pushing the boundaries of narrative scarcity into plentitude — a world where there are more stories about us than fewer.
