PRISM SOCIAL SPECIAL WITH JIM MORTRAM (VIA ZOOM)

We are very lucky to have Jim join us over zoom to talk to us about his work Small Town Inertia. The session will be introduced by Dan Burwood from Darkroom . Jim Mortram is a British social documentary photographer known for his powerful and intimate portraits of marginalised individuals in his local community. His work often explores themesof struggle, resilience, and the human spirit, giving a voice to those who are often overlooked. His photographs are both thought-provoking and deeply compassionate. Jim has exhibited his work across the UK. Recently, he exhibited his long-term social documentary project, Small Town Inertia, at Photofusion in London in September 2022. He also participated at "After the End of History: British Working Class Photography 1989–2024”, a Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition, curated by Johny Pitts, that features the work of contemporary working-class photographers.

'This talk coincides with the release of SMALL TOWN INERTIA Vol 2 & a revised edition of Vol 1. For the last 15 years I have collaborated with my community on a long form documentary that amplifies the testimony of those most affected by the brutal welfare policies of successive governments. Contrary to the demonisation & stereotyping of the marginalised by media & political philosophy & rhetoric these voices are those of people with names, identities, stories. These are the realities from the front line of the class war in the UK, un-filtered & preserved.'

Programme and ticketsThe event starts at 6:45pm (doors open at 6.30pm) at 1000 trades (1st floor room) in the Jewellery Quarter. Dan Burwood (The Birmingham Darkroom) will start by introducing with a short history of Social Photography in the UK. Jim Mortram will then present his talk starting at 7pm. Jim has requested the event to be linked to a fundraising for the Birmingham Central Food Bank. We recommend a minimum donation of £7, but if you feel generous donate more! Food banks are under stress because of an unprecedented demand. It is vital that we all contribute to help who among us are less fortunate. There is no better opportunity than donating and help Jim to spread his message. All funds donated will be given to the food bank.

The Session will be held on the 1st floor of 1000 Trades. Unfortunately there is no step free access to this space.
