About this Event
With populism on the march and a Labour government under pressure at Westminster, what is the future of ‘social democracy’? What can governments learn from this political tradition, and what would ‘practical social democracy’ look like in the twenty-first century? In this event, to mark the launch of , edited by Magnus Feldmann, Jonas Hinnfors and Mark Wickham-Jones, we bring together politicians, theorists and practitioners to explore the past, present and future of a key political tradition.
All are warmly welcome to attend. Tickets are free, but must be reserved in advance.

Speakers:
Anneliese Dodds is the Labour MP for Oxford East and a former Member of the European Parliament. She was chair of the Labour Party from 2021 to 2024 and held a number of ministerial and shadow ministerial roles. She taught public policy at King’s College, London and Aston University, and is the author of Comparative Public Policy.
Jacqui Smith (Baroness Smith of Malvern) is a Labour peer and Minister of State for Skills. She was MP for Redditch from 1997 to 2010, serving as Chief Whip, Minister for Schools and the first female Home Secretary. She previously served as chair of the Jo Cox Foundation, co-host of the For the Many podcast and a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing.
Marc Stears is Director of the UCL Policy Lab, having previously led the Sydney Policy Lab in Australia. He has served as Chief Executive of the New Economics Foundation; a fellow of University College, Oxford; and chief speechwriter to Ed Miliband during his leadership of the Labour Party. Marc’s most recent book is Out of the Ordinary: How Everyday Life Inspired a Nation and How It Can Again.
Colm Murphy (Chair) is Senior Lecturer in British Politics at Queen Mary University of London, and Deputy-Director of the Mile End Institute. He is a Contributing Editor to Renewal: A Journal of Social Democracy; a co-editor at Political Quarterly; and author of Futures of Socialism: Modernisation, the Labour Party and the British Left, 1973-1997.
