Hafa plöntur áhyggjur? Óttast þær hnattræna hlýnun og vopnvæðingu NATÓ? Þessu veltu vísindamenn og hippar fyrir sér á sjötta áratugnum. Kenningar um meðvitund plöntutegunda náðu vinsældum 1971 eftir útkomu bókarinnar Secret Life of Plants sem hélt því fram að plöntur væru vitsmunaverur. Bók Dorothy Retallack, The Sound of Music and Plants, renndi frekari stoðum undir þessar kenningar en í henni segir Dorothy frá rannsóknum sínum á áhrifum tónlistar á vöxt plantna.
2025, nokkrum áratugum eftir útkomu Plantasíu, slá tónlistarhátíðin State of the Art og Garðheimar höndum saman og bjóða upp á fría tónleika í Garðheimum.
Plantasía í Garðheimum er hluti af dagskrá tónlistarhátíðarinnar State of the Art sem fer fram 7. - 12. október 2025. Nánar má kynna sér hátíðina á samfélagsmiðlum sem og heimasíðu hátíðarinnar

Do plants worry? Do they fear global warming and NATO militarization? These were questions pondered by scientists and hippies in the 1960s. Theories about plant consciousness gained popularity in 1971 after the release of the book The Secret Life of Plants, which claimed that plants are intelligent beings. Dorothy Retallack’s book The Sound of Music and Plants further supported these theories, as she recounted her experiments on the effects of music on plant growth. She argued that aesthetically pleasing music of various genres stimulated plant growth.
One person drawn to these ideas was composer and electronic music pioneer Mort Garson. In 1976, he composed and recorded the album Mother Earth’s Plantasia on a brand-new instrument, the Moog Modular synthesizer—one of the first albums to be created entirely with such a device. The music was specifically composed for plants, intended to be played for leafy housemates to promote their growth. The album included compositions with titles like Music to Soothe the Savage Snake Plant and Symphony for a Spider Plant.
Garson’s album didn’t achieve mainstream success; the only way to get a copy was to buy a potted plant at a plant store in Los Angeles or a special type of mattress at a Sears store. Despite its limited availability, the album gained traction among fans of electronic music and is now considered a cult classic in the history of the genre. Research into the relationship between music and plant growth hasn’t definitively confirmed the theories of Dorothy Retallack and her peers, but there are many indications that some connection may indeed exist.
In 2025, a few decades after the release of Plantasia, State of the Art and Garðheimar are joining forces to offer a free concert at Garðheimar. The music of Plantasia will be performed by three keyboardists using vintage synthesizers of various sorts. Whether the concert will stimulate the growth of Garðheimar’s plant kingdom remains to be seen, but the concert will take place at Garðheimar, Álfabakki 6, at 12 noon on October 11. The performance will last just under an hour, and admission is free while space allows.
Plantasia in Garðheimar is part of music festival's State of the Art programme. The festival takes place Oct 7th - 12th 2025. You can check out the festival's programme on social media and the festival's website.
