About this Event

Event details

In anticipation of the late September opening of Living Legend, an exhibition at the Bronx River Art Center co-organized by Urban Omnibus and the Department of City Planning, please join us on September 3rd for a live recording of Randy Cohen’s Person Place Thing interview with parks advocate, writer, and founder of Loving the Bronx, Nilka Martell.

Person Place Thing is an interview show based on the idea that people are especially engaging when they speak, not directly about themselves, but something they care about. Guests talk about one person, one place, and one thing with particular meaning to them. For more information and to hear past episodes, visit PersonPlaceThing.org.

Speakers:

About the Speakers:

Nilka Martell is a parks advocate, writer, and founder of Loving the Bronx. She also serves as the board chair of the Bronx River Alliance and president of the Friends of Pelham Bay Park. An environmentalist and community advocate, she has significantly contributed to the revitalization of the Bronx River and surrounding areas. Through Loving The Bronx and the Bronx River Alliance, Nilka mobilizes volunteers for cleanup and conservation projects, fostering a sense of community and environmental stewardship. She leads a campaign to cap the Cross Bronx Expressway, convert it into green space, and end the flow of pollution from the Cross Bronx into surrounding neighborhoods.

Randy Cohen’s first professional work was writing humor pieces, essays, and stories for newspapers and magazines (The New Yorker, Harper’s Magazine, The Atlantic, Young Love comics). His first television work was writing for Late Night With David Letterman for which he won three Emmy awards. His fourth Emmy was for his work on Michael Moore’s TV Nation. He received a fifth Emmy as a result of a clerical error, and he kept it. For twelve years he wrote "The Ethicist," a weekly column for the New York Times Magazine. He is currently the creator and host of Person Place Thing, a public radio program.

Musical Guest:

Music is a central part of every recording of Person Place Thing, and on September 3rd we’ll be joined for a live performance by the GRAMMY Award-winning salsa and Latin jazz composer and performer Jeremy Bosch.
