About this Event
Passiflora Baroque Ensemble is a Baroque instrumental group, comprising two flute players and a cellist. The group is named after the passion flower but also through our shared passion for historical performance practice and Baroque music (music from around 1600-1750 and sometimes later).
There is also a play on words from a Baroque perspective. Much Baroque music has a strong element of movement or dance (as indicated by two well-known dances of the time, the Passacaglia and Passepied). Like the intertwining vines of the passion flower, Baroque music is known for its intricate compositional structures such as counterpoint (interweaving lines of music). Baroque music also has many “floral” qualities in its beauty, elegance, delicacy, and style.
Individually, we have played with period-instrument groups such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Avison Ensemble and Linden Baroque. We met in 2023, and have played for the daytime programme at Handel & Hendrix House, as well as lunchtime concerts in London.
Our repertoire encompasses a range of composers and styles, from unaccompanied solos and duos, to Baroque trio sonatas and Classical music. We play on original and / or modern replicas of period instruments (instruments composers of the time would have been familiar with) as this allows players and audience members to experience how the music may have been performed then. By combining the unique sound world of a gut-strung cello and wooden flutes, together with the one-per-part nature of our ensemble, we hope this may be a chance to experience Baroque music in an intimate and direct way.
Programme to include works by WF Bach, Quantz, Telemann, Villeneuve and more...
