A walking tour of the stunning architecture, history & landscaping of the U.S. Capitol Building grounds during peak cherry blossom season!
About this Event

The U.S. Capitol Building is famed for its stunning architecture and landscaping, done by Frederick Law Olmstead, the designer of New York's Central Park. So, what better time, peak cherry blossom season, for a walking tour of its astonishing history?!

The Capitol's interior and grounds have also held court to 225 years of misbehavior & mayhem--by powerful men (and some unscrupulous women)! Making for a unique excursion: of brawls, hangings, canings, bombings, the city & Capitol riots across two centuries, unruly protests, and assorted and sordid acts of revenge! And many noble feats as well.

When: Tuesday, March 31, 5:30 pm

What: A walking tour of the Capitol’s grounds that covers two centuries of misdeeds, murders, ghosts, betrayals--and some sterling accomplishments too. With the trees and flowers blooming all around us!

Where: MEET at the James Garfield statue, First Street SW and Maryland Avenue SW, Washington DC, DC 20003.

Length. About 2 hours.

Experience the wonder, the fear, the thrill, of:

• Olmstead's grand design

• The 9/11 commemorative tree

• The nearly fatal beating of a Senator by a Congressman

• The first assassination attempt on a President

• Bootlegged spirits by the legislators of Prohibition

• The Anne Frank commemorative tree

• Where Washington & Jefferson fired L'Enfant

• The bloody steps of a Capitol shooting

• Architects of note behind the superb Capitol Building

• The Capitol curse of its slain architect

• The burning down of the Capitol Building

• The legislators’ ladies of the evening

• The Army veterans vs. Eisenhower & MacArthur

• Where drunken louts terrified America's most esteemed lady

• The riot of the slave traders

• A doomed, wounded President

• The "Saving Private Ryan" commemorative trees

• The unusual demise of convicted spies

• Night-time bombings of the Senate

• Lincoln's lodgings, by the world's largest library

• The duel to the death—with rifles!--between two Congressmen

• The wild suffragette march

• The bombing of the Senate chamber, and the bomber’s awful demise

And more!
