About this Event

Luminous Sunsets and Water Reflections Painting Workshop: Creating Dramatic Landscapes in Acrylic or Oil

“The substance of painting is light.” André Derain

In this two-day workshop, you'll develop the skills to paint glowing sunset skies and the shimmering water reflections beneath them, two of the most visually striking and technically rewarding subjects in landscape painting! You can choose to work with either acrylics or oils.

This workshop is designed for painters who want to move beyond simply recording what they see and instead paint what they feel. You will use contrast, value, and colour temperature to heighten drama and guide the viewer’s eye. Through guided demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and individual feedback, we’ll explore how sunlight shapes form, creates movement, and transforms ordinary scenes into compelling ones.

What You’ll Learn
  • Mixing and layering warm and cool tones to build a convincing sunset sky
  • Creating smooth gradients and soft-edged clouds without muddy color
  • Understanding how light and color are mirrored in water
  • Painting the texture of still vs. rippled water using brushwork and palette knife
  • Composition principles for balancing sky and water in a landscape
  • Glazing and finishing techniques to add luminosity and depth

What to Expect
  • Step-by-step demonstrations in acrylic and oil
  • Guided painting sessions with personalized feedback
  • Practical tools you can apply to future paintings
  • A supportive, inspiring studio environment

You’ll leave the workshop with a stronger understanding of how light works in landscape painting, and the confidence to use it boldly to express mood, emotion, and place.
