Our first Panellist is Sarah Clay! Sarah has recently been announced as a finalist for the FACET Golden Guide award.

Sarah grew up in the South Australian outdoors, roaming the bush and riding horses on weekends, which sparked her love for the outdoors! She spent family holidays camping and hiking in many incredible locations, from the Flinders Ranges and Kangaroo Island, to the Grampians in Victoria, and the Coorong, to name a few.

As an adult, Sarah has continued that journey, having completed many multi-day hikes in Australia and New Zealand. She began guiding hikes around 7 years ago, starting with some volunteer work with Duke of Edinburgh Award before commencing work with Off the Beaten Track WA. It was around this time that she joined First Hike Project WA as a volunteer, combining two of her passions.

Sarah continues to work with Off the Beaten Track WA as a hike guide and has expanded to hiking with people with disabilities. She works to educate and inspire the next generations of hikers and guides, as well as delivering workshops for government organisations, local government and not for profits. She is also a state coordinator for First Hike Project WA and helped to design and deliver their program to foster more guides from within their community.

Sarah is a practising Physiotherapist where she spends much of her time encouraging people to get active in the outdoors. She says herself that “bush walking ticks lots of boxes for recovery from all sorts of problems.” Most of her work in Physiotherapy centres around working with people who have complex problems.

Sarah volunteers as a Bushfire brigade Officer, fighting fires in the Perth Hills and all around the State.

Our Second Panelist is Bellamore Ndayikeze!

Bellamore is a young African woman with a deep love for the wild and a passion for catching sunsets. Growing up in a refugee camp in Tanzania, she spent her childhood playing and exploring the nearby forest with friends. After fleeing a war-torn country and arriving in Australia as a refugee, she initially found it challenging to adapt to a landscape dominated by buildings.

Her life changed as a teenager when she was introduced to hiking by Neil, the founder of the First Hike Project. The experience sparked a profound love for hiking, which she found to be both healing and adventurous. Though she often hikes alone, Bellamore wanted to share the restorative power of nature with others. In 2021, with support from First Hike Project, she founded her own nature club dedicated to providing hiking experiences for women from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Bellamore has always dreamed of being the change. As one of the few Black women regularly seen on hiking trails, she is determined to reshape the narrative around hiking in various communities, particularly among young people and women. Through her efforts, she hopes to inspire others to embrace the beauty and peace that nature offers.”

To round things out, our last (but certainly not least) panelist is Kristine Peter!

Kristine started her career in Canadian summer camps as an out-trip leader, program coordinator, and alpine ski instructor in the off-season. While studying for her undergrad Honours Bachelor of Outdoor Recreation, Parks, and Tourism at Lakehead University, she worked in several outdoor education centres in Canada and the USA. Throughout her career, Kristine has planned, packed, and facilitated meals for thousands of participants on multi-day hiking, canoe, and cycling adventures. While working as an outdoor instructor and educator for Outward Bound Canada, Kristine had the opportunity to come to Australia and work with Outward Bound.

Kristine attended UWA to study for a master's degree in education, specialising in nutrition. She has worked in Perth's not-for-profit sector, supporting individuals and organisations to create more inclusive environments and lasting healthy lifestyle changes.

Kristine returned to university, studying at Deakin to become a Nutritionist. Her passion is to provide personalised support for individuals who have food, nutrition, and athletic goals and are looking for help to address their unique and individual needs.

She is an Experience Series Alumni having presented at our Through Hike Series in 2023. Additionally, she will be presenting at the Bibbulmun Track Members Event on the 8th of June.
