A Guided Paddle through the Past, Present & Future of an Iconic Sonoma County Waterway
🏅 Sonoma County Signature Experience
Before there was a booming San Francisco—before railroads, highways, or global shipping networks—there was a river--this river. A tidal waterway linking the bountiful land and ingenuity of the people who made Sonoma County home, the Petaluma River spent centuries as a vital lifeline between the sea and the interior of the North Bay.
It helped feed a nation and reach the world beyond it. As San Francisco’s population surged during and beyond the Gold Rush, this tidal “saltwater highway” carried food, materials, and innovation from Sonoma County to miners, merchants, and markets as far away as Europe. Without this working river, California’s story—and perhaps the nation’s—might have unfolded very differently.
Just 40 miles north of San Francisco, in the vibrant city of Petaluma, join us for an immersive guided paddle that explores the past, present, and future of the long and winding river that gave rise to our city, the growth of our county, and continues to shape life here today. From Gold Rush industry to modern-day recreation and restoration, this is a story of ambition, adaptation, and connection.
As we paddle together, we’ll pause at fascinating points along the river--from huge grain elevators to charming footbridges, stately Victorians to riverside cafes, to share stories—some historic, some contemporary, some personal (yes, a little news and gossip too). You’ll hear how different generations have “turned to” the river in their own ways, shaped by the social, economic, and environmental forces of their time—and how today’s choices are shaping what comes next.
Led by the knowledgeable Floathouse Petaluma crew, this beginner-friendly experience includes about 90 minutes on the water as part of a relaxed two-hour outing. Stable kayaks, all gear, and expert guidance are provided.
đź’˛ $75 per person includes all equipment, guided storytelling, and post-paddle perks at nearby local businesses.
This is more than a tour. It’s an invitation to connect—to place, to people, and to a story that’s still unfolding.
👉 Reserve your spot and turn to the river with us.
