This lecture-demonstration Theremin concert introduces the 1919 Soviet music instrument invented by Russian electro-physicist Lev Termen. James will perform selections from Clara Rockmore’s tour repertoire by Josef Schillinger, George Gershwin and Serge Rachmaninoff among several other composers. In addition to the music, James covers Termen’s reported activities as a Soviet spy and his many years imprisoned in the Soviet Gulag leading him to invent the first electronic “bugs” that were secretly placed in the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. As one reviewer wrote, “James has to be heard to be believed. His way with the instrument is virtually magical.”
