About We Belong
works with young migrants age 16-25 who, in the main, came to the UK as young children and have lived here most of their lives.
Context
In 2022, the UK government recognised We Belong's concerns about the unfairness of making those who have grown up here navigate a costly and uncertain 10-year path before they could secure settlement in the country they call home.
After detailed consideration and hearing the experiences of our members, the Home Office created a five-year route for young migrants with strong ties to the UK, which has already transformed many young lives and prospects.
Labour's recent proposals on 'Earned Settlement' would turn back the clock, throwing young people whose lives and futures are in the UK back into uncertainty; and come against a backdrop of unpredictable and ever-increasing Home Office fees.
Taking place just days after the Home Office’s latest consultation closes, this is a critical moment to demand stability and fairness and to examine the current settlement system and the real-world impact of proposed changes on social integration, belonging, and cohesion in the UK.
Now, more than ever, it is crucial that young migrants shape the conversation and help drive the changes that affect them, so we hope you can join us on 23 February to add your voice.
What to Expect
Two Live Panel Discussions: Hear directly from young people, parents, parliamentarians and other invited speakers about the impact of constantly moving goalposts, spiralling Home Office fees, and the reality of navigating the UK immigration system.
Interactive Exhibition: Explore a space curated by young migrants who are part of our Parliamentary and Policy Working Group, highlighting the lived experiences of our community.
Networking: Engage with young migrants, cross-party MPs and community leaders to build support for a fairer immigration system.
