About this Event

Orin: A Celebration of Afro-Cuban Roots

Led by the Legendary Daymé Arocena

Shumdesalsa is profoundly honored to present a rare, transformative workshop experience: Orin. Join us as we welcome the world-renowned Daymé Arocena to guide us through the sacred and rhythmic heart of Cuba.

The Artist: Daymé Arocena

Daymé Arocena is a Grammy-nominated powerhouse, a composer, and a choir director whose voice has been described as a mix of Aretha Franklin and Celia Cruz. A leading figure in the "Nueva Jazz" movement, Daymé has graced the world’s most prestigious stages, from NPR’s Tiny Desk to the London Jazz Festival. Her career is a testament to the power of mixing contemporary sounds with deep-seated Santería traditions, making her one of the most vital voices in Latin American music today.

The Workshop: Orin (Dancing & Singing Yoruba)

In this immersive session, Daymé invites us to explore the fundamentals of Afro-Cuban music through the "Cantos" (songs) of Yemayá, Oshún, and Changó.

We will begin with hosting a dynamic workshop exploring the movements of Yemaya, Oshun, and Chango. Participants wil dive into the spiritual richness of Orishas, mastering the rythms and steps necessary to truly connect with the music. It is the ultimate preparation to get your body and soul ready for the magic of Dayme.

These songs are more than just melodies; they are an act of cultural resilience. Despite being sung in a language no longer spoken on the American continent, these vibrations have survived for centuries. Daymé will peel back the layers of these emblematic sounds, correcting the misconceptions of "dark magic" and instead revealing a rich, sophisticated heritage that shaped the evolution of Latin American and Caribbean music.

What to expect:

  • Discovery: Learn the history and evolution of Yoruba music in Cuba.
  • Connection: Understand the meaning behind the chants for the Orishas.
  • Celebration: A space to honor the ancestors who gave shape to our modern rhythms.
  • Community: A tribute to the roots that connect us all.

Everyone is Welcome!

You do not need to be a professional singer or a practitioner of the faith to attend. This is an invitation to everyone—from the curious listener to the seasoned musician—to reconnect with the roots of rhythm.

Come celebrate, learn, and lift your voice in an environment of joy and inclusion.
