Oska Bright Film Festival is the world’s leading festival for films made by or featuring learning disabled and autistic people.
About this Event

We’re excited to launch this year’s festival with a new initiative by Oska Bright, in partnership with film distributor Tull Stories, to release and distribute feature-length films made by or featuring learning disabled people to cinemas in the UK and abroad.

Our opening night is introduced by the Oska Bright programming crew with a keynote speech from Matthew Hellett. We are delighted to be joined by the Being Ola team for a post-show Q&A.

Being Ola

Ragnhild Noest Bergem, NORWAY

72 mins

This warm-hearted documentary follows a learning disabled man, Ola, who lives in the village of Vidaråsen, whose 150 residents are a mix of people with and without disabilities. When Ola’s close friend Lasse leaves the community, he reflects on life and what he can do to become more independent.

Being Ola celebrates the importance of equality and belonging as a basis for daring to embrace who you really are. It’s a close and honest portrait that helps bridge the gap between ‘us’ and ‘them’.

With less than 5% of disabled people working in the UK film industry, Oska Bright Film Festival is driven to make change happen. Working internationally with industry partners and funded by the BFI, our team produces the BAFTA qualifying Oska Bright Film Festival, promotes accessible screenings, runs training for venues and develops skills for aspiring filmmakers.

“Collaborations with (Oska Bright) recognise the power of film to create change and highlight injustices and inequalities within the industry and society as a whole.” - Rich Warren, Encounters Film

Oska Bright Film Festival puts learning disabled and autistic people where they should be, on the big screen. We show bold, exciting and different work from voices you might not have heard before.

“A wonderful array of work and talent was celebrated in an atmosphere of great joy. The awards highlight of the year for me!” - Ben Wheatley, Director
