We celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Vincent Ward's acclaimed first feature film, Vigil.“It reminds us of cinema’s great power to excite, surprise and conjure up unique imagined worlds .. A work of astonishing, original force.” - The Guardian
Vigil was the first New Zealand film to screen in competition at the Cannes Film Festival (1984), and it received a standing ovation. A Q&A with VINCENT WARD will commence directly after the film with more announcements to come.
"Her father is dead. Isolated and alone in the broken hills, a young girl watches an intruder enter her world. He moves in with her mother. On the brink of puberty she feels a growing tension. Knowing she must defend her valley... She must remove him." - http://vincentwardfilms.com/
Vigil is a powerful atmospheric drama set in a primeval valley where four characters live and farm in an uneasy coexistence. The story unfolds through the eyes of the central character Toss, an 11-year-old girl caught up in the tragedy of her father’s death and the arrival of a stranger, Ethan. Ward spent five years making this mystical testimony to the beauty and immutability of nature's laws and the circle of life and death.
COME EARLY: Doors 5:30pm, pre-show 6pm, Q&A from 8pm.
