About this Event

This FREE forum is aimed at safeguarding practitioners working with Children and Young Adults from all marginalised communities.

Sukhdev Rathore (NWG Exploitation, Diversity, and Inclusion Lead) will be facilitating the forums

The forums will be provided quarterly.

At this NWG Diversity Forum we will have Emma Gudgeon from Southampton CC Children and Learning Services to talk about her work. She is Specialist Social Worker with a lead on Contextual Safeguarding through the Risk Outside of The Home (ROTH) program.

“Contextual Safeguarding is an approach to understanding, and responding to, young people’s experiences of significant harm beyond their families.

Southampton Children’s Services are developing their use of this approach both for the individual child’s pathway and more broadly, for assessments and plans of Contexts – peer groups, schools, and locations.

In Southampton there is a focus on creating Community Guardianship. This involves strengthening our relationships with partners and supporting them, where needed, to maintain caring and welfare-led responses to young people. It also involves collaborating with non-traditional partners to build safety in communities and ensure young people know there are adults who can be trusted and care for them.

We are confident in the power of Contextual Safeguarding when responding to extra-familial harm. This ecological approach targets the environmental and systemic issues contributing to the context of harm, rather than individual behaviours, is rooted in values of strengths-based and rights-based practice and is always characterised by caring relationships between adults and young people”.

Her presentation will be followed by a discussion/sharing of other examples of good practice in areas/ services in the field of contextual safeguarding.
