About this Event
Join us for Music Night with Shurooq Abualnas!
Get ready for an unforgettable evening of soulful Sudanese music at acta Community Theatre. Shurooq is a star in her home country Sudan who came to the UK in 2012. She has performed at a range of events across the UK, from London's Guildhall and Musicport Whitby and Shrewsbury festivals, to club and refugee community gigs.
She has a wide repertoire of Sudanese and Arabic music, including songs written for her by poet and political prisoner Mahjoub Sharif. Shurooq performed Mahjoub Sherif's anti-war song 'Um al Yatama' on MBC TV in the Middle East in 2012, and at the Holocaust Memorial concert at Guildhall in London in 2016. Her voice has been likened to Lebanon's Fairouz, to whom she has paid tribute.
She has sung twice at the Cairo Opera House - the only Sudanese female singer to do so - while in London she has sung with the Academy of Art and Arabic Heritage Choral at Kensington and Ealing Town Halls. The Choral performed at the Barbican in May 2023.
