About this Event
On Thursday March 19th, we're screening It Comes in Waves, a powerful Canadian drama by filmmaker Fitch Jean, at Niaflix.
Following the film, stay for a talkback conversation with Director Fitch Jean and filmmaker Selina McCallum, as they reflect on the making of the film, its themes, and the broader landscape of Black storytelling in Canada.
About the Film
It Comes in Waves centres on a Rwandan family rebuilding their lives in Ottawa after arriving as refugees. When their mother’s health takes an unexpected decline, Akai is forced to step into a caregiving role for his younger sister, Zera. As responsibilities shift and tensions rise, the film tenderly explores themes of displacement, resilience, family duty, and the emotional undercurrents that surface when survival becomes collective.
This film invites audiences to reflect on migration, intergenerational responsibility, and the quiet strength required to begin again.
