About this Event

This course will be delivered in adherence to Resus Council UK (RCUK) 2025 guidance.

Learning Outcomes

First launched in 1999, the Resuscitation Council UK’s NLS course equips candidates with the essential knowledge and practical skills to:

  • Competently manage newborns requiring assistance during the first 10–20 minutes of life
  • Understand the physiological causes of apnoea, bradycardia, and poor condition at birth
  • Initiate appropriate resuscitation measures
  • Perform effective airway management and provide ventilatory support

Who is this course suitable for?

The NLS course is designed for any healthcare professionals involved in the delivery and care of the newborn infant. This includes both junior and senior medical and nursing staff, midwives, paramedics and resuscitation officers.

Eligibility: All applicants must hold a professional healthcare qualification or be in training for a professional healthcare qualification.

Pre-Course Preparation

Candidates will receive the NLS course manual four weeks prior to the course date. Preparation is mandatory and includes the following:

  • Thoroughly reading the course manual
  • Completing the online pre-course multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ) - pass mark must be achieved

Important: Completion of the pre-course MCQ is compulsory. Failure to complete it will result in removal from the course, and no refund will be issued.

Course Structure

This is a one-day, face-to-face course based on the latest evidence-based guidelines and research.

Assessment and Certification
  • The course includes a single practical assessment: the airway management test
  • Candidates who do not pass are permitted one immediate re-test
  • Failure of the re-test will result in overall course failure
  • Successful candidates will receive a Resuscitation Council UK NLS Provider Certificate, valid for 4 years
  • The course is accredited for 5 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points
  • Recertification requires attendance at a full NLS provider course.

Cancellation and Refund Policy
  • Cancellations must be received at least 30 days prior to the course start date to qualify for a refund or transfer. If course materials have already been issued, the cost of the manual will be deducted from any refund.
  • Cancellations made within 30 days of the course start date are not eligible for a refund or transfer, except under exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the course administrator.
  • Requests to transfer to a future course will be considered on a case‑by‑case basis and may be subject to a transfer fee.
  • Failure to attend without prior notice will result in forfeiture of the course fee.
  • In the event that the centre cancels a course, participants will be offered either a full refund or an alternative date.
  • This policy applies to both internal and external candidates of Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust.

**IMPORTANT: NEW RCUK Guidelines 2025 (For courses taking place from 1st January 2026)**
  • RCUK regulations now stipulate that completing the pre-course MCQ is mandatory.
  • A pass grade (80%) must be achieved prior to course attendance. Multiple attempts are permitted until a pass mark is reached.
  • Candidates who do not complete the pre-course MCQ prior to commencement of the course will not be permitted to attend the face-to-face course.
  • No refunds will be issued back to candidates for non-compliance.
  • The post-course MCQ is no longer part of the assessment criteria on day of the course.
