Nell McCafferty was a uniquely talented writer, human rights campaigner and committed feminist from Derry. She lived in Dublin from 1970 but always remained a loyal Bogsider and was proud of her roots. Her ground-breaking writings on how people with little resources were treated in the courts exposed the injustives of Irish society and the class discrimination that existed in the Irish legal system. Nell was the friend of everyone who needed help. She was kind, generous and loyal always. She changed the position of women in the workplace and in the home and fought for equal pay and rights for women. She never valued material belongings and shared whatever she had with those that needed it. She spoke the truth and never worried about the personal consequences. She was a role model for generations of Irish feminists and has left a legacy now for us to follow. She was 'an instinctual socialist' as Eamonn McCann said and she was a formidable feminist.
