CEU Course Overview: Understanding and Addressing Moral Injury in Healthcare Workers

Course Title: Navigating Moral Injury in Healthcare: Ethical Decision-Making and Support for Professionals



Course Goals:

This course is designed to provide healthcare professionals, including social workers and other frontline staff, with an in-depth understanding of moral injury and its potential impact on their well-being and professional practice. Participants will learn to recognize the sources and signs of moral injury, develop strategies for ethical decision-making, and explore ways to provide support to colleagues experiencing moral distress.




Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the sources and signs of moral injury in healthcare workers.
  • Understand the psychological and social impact of moral injury on individuals and teams.
  • Apply ethical decision-making frameworks, such as the Potter Box, to navigate difficult moral dilemmas.
  • Utilize strategies for supporting healthcare workers experiencing moral distress, promoting resilience and well-being.
  • Implement best practices for ethical decision-making and seek appropriate guidance when facing morally injurious situations.
  • Integrate current policies, practices, and ethical standards into their clinical supervision and work environments.




This course will empower you to better understand the moral injuries that can occur in healthcare settings, while providing you with tools to support yourself and your colleagues in navigating difficult ethical decisions and fostering resilience.


Target Audience:
This course is ideal for mental health professionals, including social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and other practitioners who wish to enhance their knowledge. It is appropriate for professionals at any stage of their career, from beginners to seasoned practitioners.

Course Prerequisites:
No prerequisites are required. This course is designed for social workers and other mental health professionals at all experience levels who are looking to expand their knowledge.

About the Presenter:
Vanessa Valles, LCSW-S is a seasoned mental health professional with over 22 years of experience. As the owner of a private and group practice, she has dedicated the past 17 years to educating and mentoring other professionals. Vanessa is the author of The Terrible, Super Sad Day, a children's book that serves as a clinical tool for helping professionals working with children who have experienced loss or trauma. She has held various roles in the mental health field, including administrator, clinical trainer, quality assurance officer, field instructor, and clinical supervisor, and has provided CEUs to hundreds of mental health practitioners. Her broad background combines clinical expertise with educational leadership, making her a trusted resource in both practical and theoretical aspects of counseling.
