What happens after a specimen is collected in the field? How do notes, sketches, and observations become part of the scientific record? On Sunday 15th May, from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, the National Museum of Natural History in Mdina hosts ‘Nature in the Archives – Curator’s Tour’. Open to adults and to students aged 12 to 16, this session sets out to explore and answer these very questions, offering exclusive insight into how the natural world is recorded and preserved.
From original field notes and handwritten journals to preserved specimens and rare illustrations, this evening tour uncovers how generations of naturalists have carefully recorded, classified, and interpreted life on Earth. Guided by a curator, participants will discover how research begins in the field and continues in the archives, shaping the way we understand biodiversity today.
Along the way, they will encounter remarkable objects not usually explored in depth, while learning about the scientific methods, close observation, and analytical thinking that underpin natural history.
