The Military Mtarfa which is being organised by the Mtarfa Local Council, is about exposing Mtarfa’s rich military history. Mtarfa played an important part in military history during the British period. Being so close to the airstrip in Ta’ Qali, Mtarfa was home to a military hospital, cemetery and soldiers’ quarters in the Second World War.This year, the event shall be held on Sunday 17th May, between 09:30am and 5pm. This edition will increase the awareness of Mtarfa’s rich cultural history
The event shall start off with a visit to the Mtarfa Military Cemetery in order to remember the fallen during the First and Second World Wars. The Mtarfa Military Cemetery contains 238 Commonwealth burials from WW2. A wreath shall be laid in honour of these individuals. A salute by the local Scout Group will follow shortly afterwards, after which a convoy of military vehicles will drive towards the official venue.
The main event shall feature re-enactors performing various drills. There shall also be a soldiers’ field camp and field kitchen. Re-enactments of a typical Victory Kitchen, Typical bar and Life during war amongst other things. Members of the general public will be able to interact with the soldiers as they explain how weapons were used during war, through various demonstration of such weapons.
Furthermore, visitors will enjoy various displays of WWI and WWII memorabilia, including authentic weapons, radio equipment, and official attire. What’s more! There will be various Traditional Maltese games and a food court to compliment the event.
