Harness your creativity to discover the music in your everyday life, from the sounds of our city of Brotherly Love! For kids and families.
About this Event

From the honking of car horns to the chattering of squirrels and the clanging of the trolley tracks, Philadelphia is a noisy city! Join Teaching Artists Olivia and Anjoli and learn how to harness your creativity to discover the music in your everyday life.

You don’t have to be a professional musician to appreciate the music that surrounds you! Play and learn with Olivia and Anjoli, multi-talented creatives and educators, as they guide you and your family through a new way of listening. In this two-hour, hands-on workshop, we will use the principles of rhythm from music and poetry to help you and your family discover how you can hear music everywhere around you – in nature, the city, and even in the way you speak. We will start with the basics of rhythm, counting syllables and encouraging students to hear rhythm in their own speech patterns. Then, we will read some poems and investigate the rhythmic patterns in poetry, and ask ourselves: what can music teach us about poetry, and vice versa? Finally, we will create our own poems, inspired by the world around us and using our words and bodies to create musical poetry that celebrates the rhythm of our world.
