Music From Japan Festival 2026 New York

Music From Japan celebrates its 51st season with an exciting collaboration with Momenta Quartet, presenting an eclectic mix of MFJ commissions past and present.

Founded in 1975 by its current Artistic Director, Naoyuki Miura, Music From Japan has presented more than 710 works, including 128 world premieres and 115 commissions by both Japanese and American composers, in North and South America, Central Asia, and East Asia. Over the course of the organization’s 51-year history, more than 219 Japanese composers have been showcased, as well as many traditional Japanese pieces.

The performance will take place in Scandinavia House's Victor Borge Hall.

Please note that tickets at the door will be $40, cash only.

MFJ Commissions for String Quartet: Past and Present

Info: The evening’s performance will highlight a rich repertoire of past and present MFJ commissions for string quartet, and will feature world premieres by Shintaro Shibayama and Michiru Nakamura, as well as works by Somei Satoh (originally premiered by Kronos Quartet in 1991), Hikaru Hiyashi, Chiku Komiya, and Madoka Mori. This concert will feature the celebrated Momenta Quartet. With a remarkable history of collaboration—over 250 living composers and more than 200 world premieres—Momenta has become a vital force in the new music scene. A post-concert forum will follow featuring members of Momenta as well the commissioned composers.
