As we close out our 2025 Movies Made (right) Here series, we're bringing you a classic comedy with a local twist—The Heartbreak Kid (1972), written by the legendary Neil Simon. Filmed at the University of Minnesota and in Orono and Minnetonka, the movie is filled with unforgettable scenes and quirky moments set just down the road from Nicollet Island Pavilion.
Charles Grodin stars as Lenny Cantrow, a man who falls head over heels for another woman on his honeymoon. What follows is a comedy of errors, half-baked lies, and awkward interactions, all set against Minnesota's scenic charm. From Lenny's disastrous marriage to his pursuit of the beautiful Kelly, played by a young Cybill Shepherd, this film brings both laughs and cringeworthy moments in a way only Neil Simon can deliver.
This film features standout performances by Jeannie Berlin (Lenny's first wife, Lila) and Eddie Albert (Kelly's overprotective father), both of whom were nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor at the 45th Academy Awards.
