Love Letter to the Groove
By Divina Funk
Funk and hip hop have inspired and moved me in ways no other music has. From the syncopated genius of James Brown birthing funk to the raw, revolutionary flow of early hip hop pioneers, this music set me free.
Tuning into Southern college radio in my early twenties, I was captivated by artists using their voices to create an entirely new genre: hip hop. Innovations of scratching records and beatboxing rhythms awakened a fresh, electric movement in my body. I fell in love with this art form rooted in truth, resistance, and unapologetic self-expression.
This set is my love letter to Black music and culture, moving from deep funk to early hip hop, to empowered female MCs, to the artists today who are still riding that groove. Now more than ever, I want to honor our BIPOC relatives and the sacred place that funk and hip hop hold in our musical lineage.
The groove of funk music and hip hop have shaped my dance and movement, carried on the pulse of ever-changing beat and rhythm. I’m excited to share my favorite songs and mixes with you!
It’s the funk that makes us move. Funk not only moves … it removes. So come as you are and plan to sweat it out on the dance floor in this fun, playful, celebratory set. Wear your funkiest fit or whatever makes you feel sexy or free.
It’s gonna get a lil nasty, so bring your booty-shakin’ self. 🔥

Ministry of Movement Culture Codes:
Honoring Our Shared Space
At the Ministry of Movement, we are committed to creating a space of deep presence, connection, and reverence for all who gather.
We honor the role that various "medicines" can play in personal and collective journeys, and we invite our community members to engage with them in ways that are intentional, safe, and free of shame—outside of our gatherings.
When it comes to our Wednesday Night Service, we ask that all who attend uphold the integrity of the space by arriving in and maintaining a state that allows for clarity, connection, and attunement.
If you choose to partake in any "medicine" prior to joining us, we ask that you do so with mindfulness—ensuring that it aligns with the guiding principles of being true, kind, and necessary for both yourself and the collective while maintaining states of clarity, connection, and attunement to yourself and the container.
To maintain a container of safety and sacred presence:
We do not permit the consumption or carrying of any "medicines" during the Service or anywhere on the premises, including the patio.
If someone arrives in a state where they are noticeably intoxicated or unable to remain clear, coherent, and communicative, they will be asked to leave.
These requests are in place to support the well-being of our entire community and to uphold the integrity of our gatherings.
We deeply appreciate your respect and understanding as we continue to cultivate a space of safety, reverence, and collective harmony.
With love and gratitude,
Ministry of Movement
