Miracles and Marvels: early sacred drama, mystery plays and Britten's Noyes Fludde (with illustrations!)Ahead of the performance of Benjamin Britten's Noyes Fludde, this talk with musical and dramatic illustrations, will trace how the earliest sacred drama developed nearly 1000 years ago.
From the simplest dramatised liturgies, sung to plainsong in monasteries, we follow a colourful journey to the era of medieval mystery plays performed outdoors to hundreds of townspeople. Britten was part of a revival of these pageants, brought back to musical life in the mid-20th century.
This talk will be a part of the Friends Coffee Morning, with refreshments available supporting their work. There will also be opportunities to learn more about the Friends, how to join, as well as a short talk about our new exhibition 'My vill of Portsmouth'.
Refreshments available from 11am, talk starts circa 11:15am
