Me, in the palm of your edible hand: Mycelia Issue 5 special event

We have finally gotten round to it! It is too far in the future-past to call it a launch, but a party it definitely is: Mycelia is celebrating the publication of the latest issue with an evening event presenting weird and eerie visual and spoken performances by local and international artists and writers.

Join us on Saturday, 22 April 2023, in the Clubroom at the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow (CCA) for short films, live Zoom and in-person readings, a satirical AI recording, visual projections and friendly faces, courtesy of our contributors and team.

Hedera Felix is a voluntary outfit and a non-profit organisation. However, we are paying the performers presenting at the event. To help us cover the event costs, we kindly request attendees pay for entry. You can pay £3, £5 or £8 on the door, depending on what you feel you can afford. We will be taking card and cash payments.

Doors open 8.20pm

Event starts sharply at 8.30pm and ends between 11.30pm and midnight.

Hedera Felix will be selling back issues of Mycelia as well as Issue 5, all at special event prices. You’ll also find other works for sale by some of the contributors to Issue 5, books and art that have been published, re-printed or produced since the arrival of Mycelia Issue 5.

Saturn will show a digital presentation of prints from their Vulnerability Devices series and serve us a short talk on ideas behind the work.

The twosome will present a short movie called pan-pan (2019), once a three-screen video installation (as part of an immersive pan-pan experience) that is now condensed into single-screen. The Confraternity of Neoflagellants was founded in 2009 by Serjeant-at-Law Norman Hogg and Keeper of the Wardrobe Neil Mulholland; their research looks at neomedievalism in contemporary culture.

Norman will also present an AI reading of 'He is the Quarry', which we published in Mycelia Issue 5. (See image above, courtesy of Norman J Hogg.)

Professor Neil Mulholland is an artist, writer and Chair of Contemporary Art Practice & Theory at The University of Edinburgh and Director of the MA Contemporary Art Theory, Edinburgh College of Art ("the ECA"), Scotland. He is also one half of ONA, The Confraternity of Neoflagellants. Neil will give a short talk about the Weird Studies course he delivers at the ECA. We’ll be screening two short films by writer and director, Juulia Kalavainen, who lives in Edinburgh. Juulia previously collaborated with Mycelia Issue 5 contributor, Ojo Taiye to create a video for his poem 'Hereditary Blues'. She will be presenting this video at the event. Juulia will also be screening her video Craigmillar Forest. Juulia’s films explore the relationships between humans, magic and nature alongside mythological, folkloric and environmental themes.

Ruby will be reading her piece, 'The Sack', published in Mycelia Issue 5, and her poem, 'Sounding Church Monuments'. Ask Ruby about sacks and flash fiction after her reading.

Catherine will read 'Deity', her poem published in Issue 5, plus other texts. She will also show us her new artist’s book, I ask for nothing more than joy and complexity.

Ojo will be joining us from Nigeria via Zoom to read his poem, 'The Thing with Shekeres', which Hedera Felix published in Mycelia Issue 5.

Martin will read an excerpt from his short story 'The Fetch', published in Issue 5. Ask him questions about the piece afterwards. FYI, Martin is soon to publish two new stories with horror-slash-science fiction small press magazine, Black Petals.
