Zsombor Tóth-Vajna is an early keyboard specialist and conductor, and one of the leading figures of the younger generation of musicians in Hungary. He studied harpsichord and organ at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest with Miklós Spányi, graduating with highest honours. He continued his studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he worked with Menno van Delft (harpsichord and clavichord) and Richard Egarr (harpsichord and fortepiano), and studied organ with Jacques van Oortmerssen. He also holds a degree in medicine from Semmelweis University in Budapest. Currently, he is a Research Fellow and a Royal College of Music Studentship holder. As a researcher, his interests focus on the performance practice of Restoration-period keyboard music, with particular emphasis on the works of John Blow and Henry Purcell, as well as North German organ repertoire and early Hungarian keyboard music. Zsombor has performed widely across Europe and in the United States as a soloist, conductor, and continuo player with various orchestras. He is the founder and artistic director of the Budapest-based baroque orchestra Harmonia Caelestis (established in 2015). He is also an avid piano four-hands performer, appearing with his twin brother Gergely as the Piano e Forte Duo. He has released ten solo recordings on various labels. As a conductor, he specializes in historically informed performance, particularly in the works of Purcell, Handel, and Bach. Zsombor Tóth-Vajna has received numerous awards and distinctions. In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious Kerpel Prize of Semmelweis University, and in 2015 he was selected as one of the 50 most talented young Hungarians by La Femme magazine. In 2019, he was awarded the Hungarian Bach Prize, followed by the Honorary Medal of Buda Castle and the Hungarian Gold Cross of the Order of Merit in 2024. In 2025, he received Hungary’s highest musical distinction, the Liszt Ferenc Prize.
