Symphonic Masterworks Series:
Rachmaninoff — Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18
Tchaikovsky — Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36
Few concerts deliver emotional intensity like this one. Rachmaninoff’s beloved Second Piano Concerto — written after a period of deep depression and creative silence — bursts with sweeping melodies and romantic passion. After intermission, the orchestra unleashes the full force of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, a gripping musical battle with Fate that erupts into one of the most exhilarating finales in the symphonic repertoire. This is a night of unforgettable drama, virtuosity, and triumphant sound.
About the Composer: Sergei Rachmaninoff
Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff was a Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor. Rachmaninoff is widely considered one of the finest pianists of his day and, as a composer, one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music. Early influences of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and other Russian composers gave way to a thoroughly personal idiom notable for its song-like melodicism, expressiveness, dense contrapuntal textures, and rich orchestral colors.
About the Composer: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on May 7, 1840, in Vyatka, Russia. His work was first publicly performed in 1865. In 1868, his First Symphony was well-received. In 1874, he established himself with Piano Concerto No.1 in B-flat Minor. Tchaikovsky resigned from the Moscow Conservatory in 1878, and spent the rest of his career composing yet more prolifically. He died in St. Petersburg on November 6, 1893.
