The award-winning Show People Podcast with Andrew Keates continues its live monthly residency at The Two Brewers with a living legend of queer writing, playwright and screenwriter Martin Sherman.
On Wednesday 11th February 2026, Martin joins us for a special live recording and a rare, in-depth conversation about the work, the craft, and what it takes to keep telling the truth on stage and screen, especially when the world would rather you didn’t.
Martin is best known for Bent, his landmark play that brought the persecution of gay men under Nazism into the mainstream theatrical conversation, and which has gone on to be produced internationally for decades.
His writing career stretches far beyond a single title. His plays have been produced in over 60 countries, and include Messiah, When She Danced, A Madhouse in Goa, Some Sunny Day, Rose, Onassis, and Gently Down the Stream. He has also written major stage work beyond straight plays, including the Broadway musical The Boy From Oz, and stage adaptations including E.M. Forster’s A Passage to India.
On screen, Martin wrote Mrs Henderson Presents (dir. Stephen Frears), which earned him a BAFTA nomination for Original Screenplay, alongside screen work including Callas Forever, The Roman Spring of Mrs Stone, and the film adaptation of Bent.
He is still making new work now. Martin is currently adapting Frank and Percy for film, directed by Sean Mathias and starring Sir Ian McKellen and Roger Allam, with a stellar supporting cast including Stephen Fry, Derek Jacobi, Joanna Lumley, and Ncuti Gatwa.
Expect a deep conversation about being a gay writer throughout the ever changing decades and what Martin has learned wearing his own pink triangle.
